Buck UK Interview

courtesy of Bassblog.ru

So, Phil. If honestly, I didn't find any information about your personality. I know only that you are from Manchester and now live in US.

Buck UK: Yea that's correct. I grew up in Manchester, born and raised there. It's 18 going on 19 I moved to Connecticut. My parents had jobs and they was applying for this when I was like 15 but I never thought it go through. Then '08 came and time just flew by I was already in America. To be honest I'm blessed to be here, this is a good place, right next to New York and it’s nice and calm.

So where did you start writing music? UK or US?

Buck UK: It was the US. It was when I move to the US, I started to miss my english taste of music.

How did it all start for you musically?

Buck UK: I grew up listening to UK Garage. I remember friday, saturday nights on Galaxy 102 and Key 103 in Manchester. I remember few of my mates would be bumpin them Wigan Pier cds. It was crazy bassline with some MC going over the top. I also remember tunes like 'Sweet like Chocolate' by Shank & Bigfoot in the UK charts growing up. But me making music it started when I was at my mates house. 'Subox' he had, this nice little setup MPD and Midi Keyboard, knowing that you could get any sound to play on the controllers got me started.

And what exactly do you mean when you say 'english taste of music'?

Buck UK: I miss hearing UK underground dance music at the weekend, all I could hear is some mainstream bullshit hip hop on the radio. Don't get me wrong. I love hip hop, but when there talking about Bentleys and chains I ain't got all that, I can't relate to it. Oh yea. One of my favorite types of music is Grime. I grew up listening to a lot of that from Pay as U Go Crew, Wiley, Dizzie.

So as I understand you can mention that the bass music scene in US doesn't attract you?

Buck UK: It does attract to me, I've seen a lot UK acts out in New York, plus theres a whole different types of electronic music coming out of North East America. Theres a crew I roll with now in Connecticut called Bird Knowledge Productions, there opening up this scene for many different sounding acts. The only thing that is gonna make me step away is Brostep, meaning annoying stupid sounding synth bass bollocks. But it is something else too, for me in the UK bass music is like street music.

Bird Knowledge Productions is also the label, right?

Buck UK: BKP is not a label it’s just a building scene across Connecticut right now. One day it might be a label. My EP was just a free release to show support. It came out dec. It was Matters EP. It kinda got some feedback. There was a guy called Delete from Russia. He is a very good artist sounds very like Burial. There is gonna be more releases in the future, will be on digital download. I released basically for feedback. A bunch of tracks I'd done from like September to December. There were 8 tracks it was a little too much.

Tell me about feedbacks.

Buck UK: Yea there was good response off producers I listen to like Lostlogic, Delete and Mirror State. I have something in the pipeline you'll just have to wait and see. The EP was like an intro. I've fallen in love with this new sound of ambient mixed with the 2step drums with r'n'b vocals. It’s fanatasic, it's like putting your feelings on the track. When I moved to the states I started listening to Synkro, DMZ, Burial and was amazed with the sound. So much layers in the tune you can hear and how the tune emotionally makes you feel

Are there any your personal features in the process of creating tracks?

Buck UK: Most of the tracks I make just at night. I’m kinda of a night person up late, I think that is when I can get to think more about to stuff.

Are you able to describe your own sound? To give your own characteristic?

Buck UK: It sounds like being at a busy train station standing next to someone listening to 2step on the headphones, with a couple glasses of vodka in you...ha. My sound is there to make you think, like if you've had a rubbish day. It's there to lighten you up and make you feel better.

Tell me about the name - Buck UK. Now I know that your real name is Phil Buckley. What is that 'UK' part? It's about your roots? Or something else?

Buck UK: Yea it’s about where I’m from basically, just cause being in America you know... there are too many young bucks ha. Like rappers.

The EP name Matters - are there any special meaning in it?

Buck UK: Cause it matters to listen to it :)

How do you see yourself in the future? Which prospects of your own development are the most interesting for you? Do you want to be involved in music business in the future?

Buck UK: I shall see what happens you never know what happens, the internet makes it so easy for people to network with each other so who knows. Along as my equipment still works I'll be using it. Since I started making tunes I networked with people and have contacts and people booking you for sets.

What should we expected from Buck UK in 2011? What are your plans for the nearest future?

Buck UK: There will be a few collabs, and a digital release end of April. Like I said you will have to wait and see. Ah, yes. Soon you can catch Buck UK with his own show in 4-6pm on RWD.FM. This is a radio station in North America.

And, maybe as an epilogue, what would you say to the readers?

Buck UK: Keep bustin out dem tunes!

Lars Probert - Polar EP

BKP is proud to introduce...

Lars Probert, Producer/DJ/Artist, grew up in Fairfield CT listening to a large selection of music. Growing up as a young drummer and music enthusiast, his passion for music began to take over. His early influences consist of jazz, experimental, electronic, hip hop, and "good music" from the 80's. These styles combined with his constant study of dance music have helped him understand the evolution of music and follow the path to create more and more creative works. As the world evolves and electricity takes over, Lars believes that electronic music is the future... whether we like it or not.
